Jul 07, 2009: Cape Town for everyone
...

» Jul 07, 2009:

Have you ever gone to a new city on holiday, walked into a fabulous-looking restaurant, opened the menu... and nearly choked?

With exorbitant prices and dishes you can't pronounce, walking out is just as intimidating as staying and having to declare bankruptcy later.

But that is one of the great things about South African cities - they cater for all budgets, tastes and interests. No matter how much money is in your wallet or what you feel like doing, there will be something for you - you just need to know where to find it.

Tours

Budget: City Sightseeing Cape Town

This is sightseeing by a more traditional method and the big red bus
lets you hop-on and hop off at the city's most famous attractions and
landmarks. You can spend as much time as you like at each venue, but
the downside is that attraction entrance fees are not included in the
tour price.

Straight: Coffeebeans Routes

Get to know the real Cape Town through a variety of themed tours
that give you a break from traditional touristy activities. One such
route, named "Rootz Reggae Route" takes you into the heart of Cape
Town's Rastafarian community for a night of stories, music, food and
dance.

Fancy: Civair Helicopter Tours

Jetranger 3 helicopters really do offer the best view of the Mother
City. Have a quick exhilarating moment in the skies or a longer,
languid trip out to the vineyards, really arriving in style - it all
depends on your budget.

Take a helicopter trip, a bus tour or meet the reggae community of Cape Town - it's entirely up to you

Accommodation

Budget: Garden Court De Waal

Think convenience, top-notch amenities, excellent service and affordability. Rooms have everything from hairdryers to aircon and are all within quick driving distance from Cape Town's top attractions.

Straight: Protea Hotel Cape Castle

The Protea Hotel Cape Castle is situated on the Main Road Green Point, keeping it close to many of the city's best attractions.

Fancy: Bantry Bay Luxury Suites

With the crashing waves only 200m away, Bantry Bay Luxury Suites manages to combine convenient city living with uncompromising natural beauty. Excellent service comes standard and everyone from business travellers to holidaymakers are blown away by this five star boutique hotel experience.

Activities

Budget: A walk

Cape Town has all the ideal locations and you already have the
equipment. Stroll along the beach, go on a mountain hike, window shop
along Long Street or wander through the Company Gardens with the
squirrels.

Straight: Watch a sport's match

Who doesn't love screaming while doing the Mexican wave? From cricket matches to rugby tours and the upcoming 2010 World Cup -
there is sport a-plenty in Cape Town. You could even just go to a local
school on a Saturday morning and watch some future Springboks in action.

Fancy: Have your own F1 race

On Killarney's 3,6km racing track, you will learn to drive real
Reynard racing cars - think 450 BHP/per tonne. The cost includes
equipment, training, catering, awards, photos, the driving and of
course, the notoriety of someone who has nailed that track.

Burn some rubber, catch a game or take a walk - there is plenty to do in Cape Town

Restaurants

Budget: Kalky's

Kalky's is an institution in Cape Town and offers some of the freshest fish, liveliest characters and loudest dining you will ever have. Between R30 and R40 will get a half kilogram of fish and chips, some brightly coloured sauces and an incredible harbour view.

Straight: Greens

Greens restaurants have started popping up all over Cape Town. Relax, the name doesn't mean they only serve leafy veg - from pizzas to gourmet burgers and elaborate berry and bacon breakfast concoctions, there is something for every taste and every budget.

Fancy: Five Flies

Located in a historic Cape Dutch building, Five Flies just oozes old-world class - expect private dining rooms, cigar lounges, exquisite food presentation and cosmopolitan dishes.
