Sep 03, 2009:
Spring is here - and that's great news for all unless you are one of those rare types that live for freezing days. If you're ready to go out and about chasing sunny skies we have a few activities around the country you might enjoy.
Diving
Bright sunshine means going underwater gets even better, which is good news if you're trying the colder Cape Town side. That's one of the best things about diving in this city; you can choose the cold Atlantic or the warm Indian side.
Simon's Town is known for its great diving spots. There are four dives all in close proximity to each other, an area often referred to as "A Frame". Here you can swim amongst sole, pipe fish, rays and kelp forests. False Bay is another great diving area, especially because of the wrecks. Wrecks worth checking out are Clan Stuart, Roman Rock and Windmill Beach.
Eating and sight seeing.
If diving in Simon's Town doesn't appeal to you, the small town can still hold great attraction. Check out the navy ships, eat at the tiny restaurants (they range from fish and chips spots to the famous Tibetan tea house), and take pictures of the African penguins at Boulders beach.
Archery
Go all Robin Hood on your family and friends by trying your hand at archery. However, be environmentally conscious; realising how much fun a bow and arrow is doesn't mean you should actually go off into the wild to start hunting animals.
Dawson's Game and Trout Lodge in Mpumalanga offers target archery activities for guests, individuals and corporate groups. The activity is divided into a 20-minute training run and then you're set for an hour long shooting session.
Safari on Elephant back
They might be terrifyingly huge but Elephants also have an innate kindness that immediately calms you when you get up close. So a game ride atop an elephant can be one of the most exhilarating safari experiences if you just calm down. Do it at Pilansberg Elephant Back Safaris at the Letsatsing Reserve.
Flowers everywhere
Blooming flowers and suddenly alive trees are one of the most anticipated spring events. And in Durban you don't need to exit the city to check out some of the most enthralling flowers. Try the Durban Botanical Gardens, widely regarded as the country's best looking city park lands.
Founded in 1849, the DGB is home to a collection of sub-tropical trees, orchids, palms and other botanical marvels of African, American and Asian origins.
Go bungee!
You've probably thought about it at some point. Or you're busy thinking about it. Make this the spring you finally go off the deep end by bungee jumping. Do it at the Bloukrans Bridge at the Tsitsikamma Forest Village market, about 40km east of Plett along the Garden Route. At 216m it's the world's highest bungee jump - not to scare you anything. Think of it as a baptism of greatness.
