History of Hout Bay
In 1614 an English sailor records having taken wood from the forests of Hout Bay in order to mend his ship.In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape and it wasn't long before he visited Hout Bay. He describes the forests of Hout Bay as being the finest in the world. It was Van Riebeeck who gave Hout Bay its present name. In 1652, on November 22nd, Van Riebeeck wrote in his journal about Houtbaaitjen. Since then it has been known as Hout Bay.
Hout Bay is the "come back again" Bay
Hout Bay is a beautiful seaside village about 20km South West of Cape Town, South Africa. It is known to the locals as the 'Republic of Hout Bay' and has stunning sea and mountain views with numerous attractions for visitors. The road linking Hout Bay and Noordhoek is the world famous Chapman's Peak Drive opened to the public in 1922.
Hout Bay never lost its village feel.
The harbour is the heart and soul of Hout Bay where the wharf, quays and jetties are a-buzz with the sound of deep sea fishing boats, pleasure boats, scuba launches, gulls and meandering holidaymakers from near and far. Watch the fishing boats offload their catch or visit the fish market to buy salmon, hake, snoek, yellow-tail or rock-lobster caught an hour before and enjoy the unique colloquial witticism of the Cape Malay fishermen as they discuss the day's success or failures.
