Tourism expert John van Rooyen has predicted that Durban has the makings of another Rio de Janeiro, one of the world's top holiday destinations.
Reacting, the city's deputy mayor, Logie Naidoo, went further and said Durban could become another Waiki-ki Beach in Honolulu, or the French Riviera.
Van Rooyen, Southern Sun's operations director, told guests at a charity event at the Elangeni Hotel last week that it was his life's ambition to make Durban a sought-after destination.
The Johannesburg-based Van Rooyen, who used to work in Durban, said he had gone for a cycle ride earlier in the day along the beachfront, where a major upgrade is taking place.
Impressed with the changes and improvements, he said: "Let's make Durban another Rio."
He said there was "so much going on in the city at the moment, it is wonderful for Durban".
"The new developments will all be visible soon."
Naidoo, who was headed for Trinidad where he is to address the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference about 2010 in Durban, said he agreed with Van Rooyen.
"Our upgrade along 15km of promenade is going to be absolutely magnificent," Naidoo said. "We have a world-class beach with warm waters where you can swim, surf, fish, snorkel and boat. This is one of our best tourism assets."
Asked about the Blue Flag issue - Durban no longer has the internationally-recognised status - he said that when the Blue Flag achieved a status that was "applicable to all", the Blue Flag would fly again.
